Agricultural Service Board

The M.D. of Smoky River's Agricultural Service Board is appointed under the Agricultural Service Board Act of Alberta.  A.S.B.'s were first conceived by Alberta Agriculture in 1945.  The intent was to have a local grassroots body to work with area agricultural producers on issues and concerns specific to that municipality.  Every rural municipality in Alberta has an appointed Agricultural Service Board.  A.S.B.'s are unique in Canada and quite possibly the world.  The A.S.B. and Agricultural Department Staff work under the Agricultural Service Board Act, the Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act, the Soil Conservation Act and the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Acts.

In the M.D. of Smoky River the A.S.B. is made up of the elected Councillors of the Municipal District. The Agricultural Fieldman is the person responsible for overseeing A.S.B. programs and initiatives in the M.D.   The Fieldman reports to Council at each monthly meeting.  More in-depth discussions on programs and policies which direct the Agricultural Services Department take place at A.S.B. meetings, typically held 2 to 3 times per year as required.

The A.S.B.'s of Alberta meet and discuss issues of joint concern at an annual Regional meeting held in the Peace Region, and then at an annual Provincial A.S.B. Conference hosted by one of the 5 Region's which the Association of Alberta Agricultural Fieldmen have broken the province into.  South Region, Central, North East, North West & Peace Region.

See the Council's page for complete information on the A.S.B. members.
